Drought Tolerant Border

With our climate becoming more extreme, as gardeners we should go with nature and plant the right plant for the right place.

If your garden in the South East it is likely that you may have a dry, sun baked spot in which nothing will grow.

Drought resistant plants have adapted themselves to cope with low water availability. Many have silver or hairy leaves which are botanically designed to reduce excessive water loss. If you intend on planting up a dry spot it is advisable to ensure your soil is free draining especially during the wet winter months.

Suggested Plants

Lavandula stoechas (French lavender) - distinctive purple bracts, evergreen small shrub with aromatic foliage.

Papaver rupifragum (Poppy) – perennial poppy with bright orange flowers. Easily grown from seed.

Artemisia ‘ Powis Castle’ – filigree-leaved evergreen plant with silver aromatic foliage. Can turn ‘leggy’ over time and should be pruned back hard.

Eryngium x oliverianum (Sea holly) – Spiky silver-blue flowers with purple tinges.

Lychnis coronaria (Rose campion) – white, pastel or pink flowers.
