How To...
Grow in Containers

You are able to grow a range of plants in containers, unlike in your borders in which you are restricted by your soil conditions.

The most important aspect of growing any plant in a container is the growing media - substrate.

Soil based composts (mainly consisting of loam) are heavy, and less prone to drying out – ideally suited to long term specimens such as shrubs or small trees. Peat or Coir based composts are lighter and are more suited to temporary planting such as bedding displays. None the less it is important that you do not let your containers dry out completely as they can be difficult to re-wet. As plants are in an artificial environment you are responsible for the supply of nutrients. It is important you feed your container plants regularly during the growing season.

Substrate additives such as moisture retaining gels and slow release fertilizers may be incorporated into the growing media prior to planting. This will aid moisture retention and nutrient uptake.
